Savvy Seniors and the Internet

March 30, 2010 in Technology

Who would have thought that the fastest growing demographics using the Internet are senior citizens? The Internet has opened up a whole new world to the aging population.  It’s offering seniors the convenience of staying in touch with families and friends that may be living far away. Many are using the Skype, a free service, enabling them to chat with loved ones, and even being able to see their grandchildren on their computer screen in real time. Now grandparents are able to watch their grandchildren grow up even if they are on the other side of the world.

Approximately 30% of seniors aged 65 and older have gone online at sometime. However with those between the age of 50 and 64 statistics show that approximately 70% of this age group go online for information of all types from finding a phone number, getting a new recipe, gardening tips, health information and making purchases.

The Internet has become a great hobby for many seniors. It’s a great place for retirees to find travel deals and information on products that they are considering purchasing. More and more people of all ages are making purchases on line. You will find whatever you want often at very competitive prices. Plus the internet is a great means of doing a search on products.

Many like to check out reviews, so if you are looking for a piano keyboard you might look under keyboard reviews, or as a golfer looking to improve your swing you may want to check out review medicus driver. Shopping on line is so much easier and safer these days. There was a time when I would not buy a thing online and now I use it often. It’s easy and convenient to find information and the ability to get the product that you want. You will often find a solution to a problem on line, or items that you may have difficulty finding in the stores, plus a larger selection.

Many people have been able to trace and reconnect with old friends and family members through the Internet. As we get older connecting with old friends can be a great experience. About two years ago I reconnected with girl that I was friendly with when I was about 13 years old.  I now live in Canada; she still lives in the UK. We email each other occasionally and have shared old photos.  My brother decided to do our family tree and in his research came across information and photos of our father’s brother who was lost in the war in 1943. We have information about when and where his plane went down that was just not available back then.  We now have photos of him and old letters that were written while the family still had hope of his return. It was very emotional but also very rewarding to find all this information.

More and more people are setting up their own websites. They are either looking at them as a business venture or as a way for friends and family to visit their site and share photos of their grandkids and travels etc. If this is something that may interest you it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to set up your own site. There are a number of options available to you, so check it out on the internet (of course).

People learn new hobbies on line they can learn to play bridge, chess, learn oil painting, how to cook Thai food, gardening tips, how to fix your plumbing problem, you name it the information is at your fingertips.

How to look good and feel good is a very popular use of the internet too. It used to be that seniors would pretty much accept the fact that they were getting older and dealing with a number of aging issues, most didn’t attempt to do much to fight it. There wasn’t the information or the technology years ago. Today we have information on how to prevent or at least delay many of these age related issues. With modern technology we have phototherapy skin care to keep our skin looking more youthful. Lasers have been a real benefit to many for various reasons. We have laser eye surgery, there’s laser light hair therapy for thinning hair and hair loss which has helped thousands of men and women re-grow and thicken their hair. Lasers are used in many surgeries today making them far less invasive.  We even have lasers treatments on the market to use at home making some of these processes far less expensive.

The beauty of it all is that we can do our research on places, people, and products, right here on the internet. And now we are savvy enough to do it ourselves. Boy have we seniors come a long way?
