Many families today, are finding themselves having to go out, research and find individual health insurance for themselves or the entire family.

The great news is that there are insurance carriers that offer several different individual health insurance plans.  Many offer the following plans.

  • HMO
  • PPO
  • POS (Point of Service Plans. An HMO with an Out of Network benefit
  • Indemnity Plans. Traditional Insurance / No Network.

Several of these plans are similar in design as the larger group plans, but it is very important to review the details in each plan. It is important to the following items:

  • What percentage of my doctor and hospital bills will this health insurance plan pay for?
  • How much will I have to pay each month for this plan?
  • How much will have I have to pay before my plan begins to pay?
  • What are the cost of an office visit to the doctors,
  • Is preventive healthcare covered in my plan or is there a cost?
  • Does the plan include routine medical checkups and shots, such as fly shots, to prevent disease?
  • What kind of services does this plan cover?
  • Does the plan cover pre-existing condition limitations?
  • Does the plan cover hospital emergency room and urgent care?
  • Dose it cover hospital stays?
  • Does the plan for home healthcare and or medical equipment and supplies?
  • Does if cover long term care?
  • What does the prescription drugs coverage look like?

It is imperative to contact your state insurance department to make sure the insurance carrier is licensed to sell products in the state you reside in and to make sure that the insurance carrier you are looking at is not under any type of disciplinary or correct action plan by the state insurance department. It will also benefit you to check the accreditation status of the plan as well.
