Social Security – Child Eligibility
July 24, 2009 in Social Security
Under the eligibility rules Social Security enforces, children can qualify to receive benefits. Children (biological, adopted, or step) who have parents who are receiving benefits, are under the age of 18, and are unmarried, qualify. A child may also receive benefits if he/she is 18-19 years old and a full time high school student or is 18 or older and is disabled from a disability acquired before age 22. “Adult children” disabled before the age of 22 will receive children’s benefits on their parent’s record as long as the “adult child’s” parents are deceased or receiving Social Security benefits. Though there is a limit for large families, a child will receive benefits equal to ½ of the parents full benefit amount.
