Are You Having Fun in Your Senior Years?
March 1, 2010 in Friends, Love & Sex
You may be a senior in your retirement years but the question is do you allow yourself to have fun? You have probably worked many years and prepared the best you can for this time in your life. The problem is for many of you that it’s easy to become too serious about everything, leaving many not living the life that they deserve.
There are lots of ways to bring fun into your life. One of them is spending time with grandchildren, this can be a lot of fun but even grandchildren grow up which often means that you may not get to see so much of them. Also many of the things that they thought were fun when they were younger are very un-cool now.
One thing for sure is that having other people in your life is extremely important. The best times are when you’re sharing experiences with others, especially those that have similar interests as you. Getting a group of friends together to play a card game or even cooking a meal together is a lot more fun than doing this on your own. How about getting some of your senior friends together to take a trip to the beach, to go for a picnic or on a hike? I’m sure they will appreciate it and have fun, plus this need not break the bank either.
How many things have you always wanted to do but still haven’t done? It’s easy to put those ideas aside and say to yourself that it’s too late now. The truth is it probably isn’t too late at all for most things. Of course, if what you always wanted to do was something very physical and challenging you might have to adjust your goals a bit now, but is it possible to still do it in some form? If you always wanted a challenge like rock climbing one of the world renowned rock faces and now in your senior years to attempt this goal may be out of the question, however, if you’re fit enough you might be able to tackle something a lot less challenging.
Maybe you always wanted to become a golf pro but never had the opportunity to follow your dream when you were younger. This doesn’t mean that you can’t compete in golf tournaments and improve your game while enjoying the company of friends and keeping fit at the same time. You may even be able to give your friends a few useful tips too.
For numerous people some of the top skills to learn on their to-do list during their retirement years are to learn to paint, learn to play guitar, learn piano or some other instrument. Many may have started learning these activities in their younger years only to give them up when life got too busy with career and family responsibilities. For many that desire to become proficient at a skill that they really admire; the thought will be percolating in the back of their mind. Often this desire revisited when they are considering what they may do when they have more time on their hands. Even though they may give these ideas serious consideration, sadly most don’t follow through with the action part leaving it just an unfulfilled dream.
Most of us have examples of elderly people doing something major for the first time in their life, often on a milestone birthday. There’s the lady that went skydiving for the first time on her 90th birthday. Another senior took a hot air balloon ride on their 80th birthday. Besides these one-off adventures; there are many seniors 80years old and older that have continued to ski and take part in other activities that many of us consider too risky and just for the young.
If you were to brainstorm some ideas with a few friends I just wonder what great ideas you would come up with. If there is still a skill that you want to learn there are so many options available to help you achieve that goal; whether it’s learning something new or to improve on something old. There are numerous tools and courses available, many where you can learn in the comfort of your own home. Another advantage is that you do not have the high cost of private tuition. For example if one of your wishes is to learn to watercolor and you have other friends that also want to learn to paint; consider purchasing a Learn to Paint course that you could share the cost and all benefit from.
If its golf that you are into and you want to improve your golf game there are numerous golf swing training aids that you could purchase and again share the cost with friends that want to learn or improve on the same skills.
When you are on a fixed income and finances are a bit tight it becomes very easy to not pursue what’s important to you. Keep in mind that these activities are not only fun and fulfilling they help to keep your mind active and healthy too. Become resourceful and find ways to still pursue your dreams no matter how old you are.
Are you having fun yet?
